It looks like me …
🫣 Being resistant to pull the trigger on choosing the perfect accent wall color for my bedroom.
🤔 Going in circles, looking for the perfect mirror for my bathroom.
😔 Avoiding picking the perfect placement to hang shelves in the kitchen.
Truly, my perfectionism has been slowing me and this project down.
But really, it’s not just me and my house project.
The truth about perfectionism is that it’s pervasive (and valued) in our Western capitalistic society.
The truth about perfectionism is that it’s a deep-rooted message coming at us from the dominant culture.
The truth about perfectionism is that it’s so firmly planted in our consciousness that we sometimes forget to challenge it.
And, we believe it’s the only way to be.
Like without a doubt, we believe that doing a project perfectly is the way—or else it’s a failure.
Perfectionism not only does a number on our nervous system but it slows us down from completing the project that we want to get done.
I see it in myself—and, I see it in my clients who run their own small business.
Like, Julie who is terrified to teach her first Yoga class—worried that her curriculum isn’t perfect.
Or, Susan who is resistant to distributing her program brochures—out of fear they don’t look perfect.
And, Kate who is stuck sending out her newsletter—afraid her writing isn’t perfect.
I get it, I have this part too. Most people do.
But, if you want to move forward with your goals—whether it’s a house reno-project or taking the next step to grow your business—it makes sense to question your perfectionist conditioning.
☝🏻It makes sense to do the deep inner work to understand your learned belief—that if it isn’t perfect, then it’s a failure.
☝🏻It makes sense to have self-compassion for the part of you that wants to do it perfect—or not at all.
☝🏻It makes sense to poke through the resistance to get into action—especially if it’s not perfect.
It’s what I am doing—and what I help my clients to do, too.
It’s what I call Leading with Love.
